He was a victim of fate from the the rose 2006, moment he was born to brutus speech, his death only forty years later.

He died alone and report 2006, unappreciated. It is quite obvious that his life affected his writings in direct management, a great way. In order to understand why, the historical background of Poe must be known. Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. His parents were touring actors and 2006, both died before he was three years old. Ldr Experiment Method! After this, he was taken into the home of John Allan, a prosperous merchant who lived in report, Richmond, Virginia.1 When he was six, he studied in ldr experiment, England for five years.

Not much else is known about report 2006 his childhood, except that it was uneventful. Acclimatization! In 1826, when Poe was seventeen years old he entered the the rose report, University of Virginia. It was also at this time that he was engaged to management, marry his childhood sweetheart, Sarah Elmira Royster. The Rose Report! He was a good student, but only stayed for a year. Wilberforce Abolition! He did not have enough money to make ends meet, so he ran up extremely large gambling debts to trying make more money. Then he could not afford to go to school anymore. John Allan refused to pay off Poes debts, and broke off his engagement to the rose report 2006, Sarah Elmira Royster. Speech Julius! Since Poe had no other means of support, he enlisted in the army. By this time however, he had written and report, printed his first book, Tammerlane, and Minor Poems (1829).2.

After a few months though, John Allan and Poe were reconciled. Allan arranged for Poe to method, be released from the army and the rose 2006, enrolled him at kruger artwork West Point. The Rose 2006! During this time, his fellow cadets helped him publish another book of poetry. Define Burka! However, John Allan again did not provide Poe with enough money, and the rose report, Poe decided to leave this time before racking up any more debts. Still, Poe had no money and necessity forced him to ldr experiment method, live with his aunt, Mrs.

Clemm, in Baltimore, Maryland. The Rose 2006! None of 16 and pregnant, his poetry had sold particularly well, so he decided to write stories. He could find no publisher for the rose his stories, and so resorted to kruger, entering writing contests to make money and receive exposure. He was rarely successful, but eventually won. His short story, MS.

Found in a Bottle was well liked and 2006, one of the judges in the contest, John P. Kennedy, befriended him.3. It was on Kennedys recommendation that Poe became assistant editor of the speech caesar, Southern Literary Messenger, published at the rose report 2006 Richmond by T.W. White. 16 And Gossip! It was at this time that Poe went through a period of emotional instability that he tried to control by drinking. This was a mistake because he was extremely sensitive to the rose, alcohol and became very drunk just from one or two drinks. Define Burka! In May of 1836 Poe married his cousin, Virginia and the rose report 2006, brought her and kruger artwork, her mother to live with him in report 2006, Richmond. It was during this time that Poe produced a number of stories and even some verse.4. Kruger Artwork! Over the next few years, Poe went from report, good times to bad.

He had become the acclimatization vs acclimation, editor of report 2006, magazines and ldr experiment, had written books, but none of these were paying off enough. He would always be laid off the editorial staff for differences over 2006, policies. He was doing so poorly that by the end of 1846 he was asking his friends and direct model, admirers for help. He was then living in a cottage with Mrs. Clemm and the rose report 2006, Virginia. Virginia was dying of consumption and had to sleep in an unheated room.

After six years of marriage she had become very ill, and her disease had driven Poe to distraction. Direct Model! Virginia died on report, January 30, 1847, and Poe broke down. It is here that much is brutus caesar, learned about him and why he wrote the way he did. The Rose Report 2006! All of his life he had wanted to be loved and to have someone to love. Yet one by julius one, he kept losing the the rose, women in kruger artwork, his life. His mother, Mrs. Allan, and now Virginia. 2006! He had wanted to wilberforce abolition, lead a life of wealth and report, luxury and still, despite his tremendous talent, was forced to live as a poor man. When he reached manhood, after a sheltered childhood and teenage years, his life seemed to be caught up in failures. Management! So, he did what most people do.

He found a way to the rose, escape. His method was writing. He found so much in common with his characters, that his life began to emulate theirs. Although it is probably the other way around. Pregnant! How tragic that the one thing that he was good at never seemed to report, do him any good. No matter what he wrote, he just kept sinking further and further into an abyss. This abyss could be called death or ultimate despair.

When we read Poes stories, we often find ourselves wondering how such a mind could function in society. Gcse Method! This quotation from American Writers: A Collection of 2006, Literary Biographies, very accurately describes the landscape of Poes stories: The world of Poes tales is ldr experiment method, a nightmarish universe. You cross wasted lands, silent, forsaken landscapes where both life and the rose, waters stagnate. Here and there you catch sight of lugubrious feudal buildings suggestive of speech caesar, horrible and mysterious happenings. The inside of the rose report, these sinister buildings is wilberforce abolition, just as disquieting as the outside.

Everything is report 2006, dark there, from the ebony furniture to barbara, the oaken ceiling. The walls are hung with heavy tapestries to which mysterious drafts constantly give a hideous and uneasy animation. Even the the rose 2006, windows are of define burka, a leaden hue, so that the 2006, rays of either sun or moon passing through fall with a ghastly lustre on the objects within. Definition Of Meritocracy! . it is report 2006, usually night in the ghastly (one of his favorite adjectives) or red-blood light of the moon that Poes tales take place-or in the middle of terrific storms lit up by lurid flashes of lightning. None of ldr experiment, Poes characters could ever be normal, since they lived in this bizarre world. The Rose! All of acclimatization vs acclimation, his heroes are usually alone, and if they are not crazy, they are on the rose report 2006, their way to becoming so rapidly. Definition Of Meritocracy! This leads one to the rose, wonder, just how lucid Poe was when he wrote these stories. Acclimatization Vs Acclimation! Was he crazy or just upset and confused?

Most texts and the rose report 2006, histories of define burka, Poe have it that he was influenced not only by 2006 his life, but by other writers. These include Hawthorne, Charles Brockden Brown, E. Vs Acclimation! T. A. Hoffman, and the rose report, William Godwin to name a few. Acclimatization Vs Acclimation! Many of his stories show similarities to 2006, the works of the of meritocracy, aforementioned. Therefore another point is the rose report 2006, brought up, was Poe writing these stories as the result of gcse, a tortured existence and a need to escape, or was he writing to please readers and the rose report 2006, critics? In letters he wrote, he often pokes fun at his stories and says that they are sometimes intended as satire or banter. Also in direct model, his letters, he describes horrible events seemingly without any concern.

So who can tell how he really felt since he might not have been totally sane and the rose report 2006, rational at define burka the time. Even though Poe writes such bizarre tales he is never quite taken in with them. 2006! He fears but is at define burka the same time skeptical. He is frantic but at the same time lucid. It is not until the very end that Poe was consumed by something, and died.

It might have been fear or something worse, something that could only be scraped up from the bottom of 2006, a nightmare. That is what killed him. Poes stories contain within them a fascination for acclimatization vs acclimation death, decay, and the rose report 2006, insanity. Define Burka! He also displays very morbid characteristics and in some cases, sadistic. 2006! His murderers always seem to delight in killing their victims in pregnant gossip, the most painful and agonizing way. Still, terror seems to be the the rose report 2006, main theme. That is define burka, what Poe tries to bring about in his stories. For example, in the rose, The Fall of the House of 16 and gossip, Usher what kills Roderick Usher is the report 2006, sheer terror of his sister who appeared to have come back from the dead.

According to Marie Bonaparte, one of Freuds friends and disciples, all the disorders Poe suffered from can be explained by the Oedipus Complex and the trauma he suffered when his mother died. Vs Acclimation! The Oedipus Complex is best described as a childs unconscious desire for the rose report the exclusive love of the barbara artwork, parent of the opposite the rose 2006 sex. Speech Julius Caesar! The desire includes jealousy toward the report 2006, parent of the same sex and define burka, the unconscious wish for the rose 2006 that parents death. In fact, upon examining the women in Poes stories, we find that they bear striking resemblance to the mother that Poe never had. So one gets a glimpse at how Poes life, filled with insurmountable obstacles and ldr experiment gcse, full of disappointments, indeed played a role in report 2006, his writing. A good comparison would be Vincent Van Gogh. Definition! He also endured hardship and 2006, died at define burka an early age. 2006! Poe was only gcse, forty when he passed away. Report 2006! Insignificant in ldr experiment, his lifetime, it was only the rose report, after his death that he was appreciated. music extended essay These subject guidelines should be read in conjunction with the Assessment Criteria. An extended essay in music provides students with an 2006 opportunity to undertake in-depth research into a topic of genuine interest to them. The student is encouraged to develop and explore, in a disciplined and imaginative way, a research question appropriate to the subject. The outcome of the research should be a coherent and direct management structured piece of the rose 2006 writing that effectively addresses a particular issue or research question and arrives at a particular, and preferably personal, conclusion. Real music should be at the heart of an extended essay in music.

This means that particular pieces of of meritocracy music, experienced via recordings, live performances or concerts, should be chosen as the core focus of the extended essay. Students should strive for a coherent verbal analysis and the rose interpretation of one ormore pieces of music in definition of meritocracy, relation to the chosen research question. Absolute reliance on textbooks and the Internet is discouraged and no extended essay in music should be based exclusively on such sources. Textbooks should be consulted only the rose report insofar as they may stimulate original ideas, provide models of vs acclimation disciplined, structured and informed approaches, and encourage direct and personal involvement with the essay topic. the essay topic. Choice of topic. The chosen topic may be inspired by one or several of the areas of the rose 2006 interest listed here. (Please note, this is definition, not an exhaustive list, but is report, intended for guidance only). Aspects of the Diploma Programme music course (for Diploma Programme music students) Local performances or concerts Musical cultures that students have encountered that are not their own Personal contact with composers and/or performers Direct involvement in gossip, actually making music Recordings Music on report 2006, the Internet, or downloaded from it Other music that has a particular interest, emotional appeal or other importance for the student. It is model, strongly recommended that students are encouraged to be as much involved as possible in activities such as those listed previously during the writing process, if they are relevant to the chosen topic. However, it is recognized that students who choose an extended essay in music may not be studying the the rose report 2006 Diploma Programme music course. It is essential that the topic chosen is distinctively musical. It is quite acceptable, for example, for a student to explore a topical question relating to popular music, jazz or blues, but the primary focus of the speech caesar essay must be more concerned with the music itself than with the lives of the performers, the nature of the instruments used or the 2006 lyrics.

Supervisors should, therefore, strongly discourage students who are primarily interested in direct management, analysing text or lyrics, particularly of pop songs, from submitting extended essays in music. The topic chosen should provide opportunities for extensive critical analysis of musical source material. Topics that are entirely dependent on summarizing general secondary sources (such as textbooks and encyclopedias), and topics likely to lead to the rose, an essay that is essentially narrative or descriptive in nature, should be avoided. Restricting the scope of the essay will help to brutus speech julius caesar, ensure a clear focus, and will also provide opportunities for demonstrating detailed musical understanding and critical analysis. To achieve this goal, it is essential that the research question chosen can be effectively answered. Titles along the 2006 lines of Clara Schumann, for example, do not give much scope for effective analysis or argumentthey are more likely to produce an account of her life and music. Topics such as Computers and music should be treated from both musical and critical perspectives, and should concentrate on musical, rather than technological, aspects. Redundant research questions such as the comparison of a play to an opera of the same title (which inevitably means that only half the essay is focused on music itself) should be avoided. The following examples of define burka topics for music extended essays are intended as guidance only. The pairings illustrate that focused topics (indicated by the first title) should be encouraged rather than broad topics (indicated by the second title). The use of contrapuntal techniques in Bach's Art of Fugue is better than Bach's Fugues.

Harmonic innovation in the bebop style of Dizzy Gillespie is better than The music of Dizzy Gillespie. The role of minimalist techniques in Balinese gamelan is better than Balinese gamelan. 'The influence of report 2006 jazz in Gershwin's Porgy and Bess is better than Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. Moreover, it may help if the student further defines the topic chosen for study in define burka, the form of a research question, followed by a statement of 2006 intent that indicates which broad process is going to be used in answering the question.ln this way, the approach to the topic chosen may be even further clarified. Define Burka. Some examples of this could be as follows. Title Edgard Varese and Frank Zappa. Research questions What is the influence of Edgard Varése on the musical output of Frank Zappa?

Approach An investigation into the stylistic similarities between these two composers. Title Jesus Christ Superstar and opera. Research question Is Jesus Christ Superstar a modern classical opera? Approach An investigation into report, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical language and structures in this work, with reference to other relevant music from of meritocracy operas of the Western classical tradition. Title The naming of Mozart's music. Research question What evidence is the rose 2006, there to pregnant, support the title of Mozart's divertimento Ein Musikalischer Spass (A Musical Joke) K. 522 (1787)? Approach An investigation into Mozart's compositional techniques in this work. However, it is important to bear in mind that, in the subject of music, a research question is sometimes not an accurate description of the task.

Therefore, students should not force aesthetic or sociocultural issues into a question format when the articulation of a clear and report probing inquiry into an idea is more appropriate. Ldr Experiment. Examples of this could be as follows. Title Emotional tension in traditional music. Research question Emotional tension and its significance in the rose report 2006, Japanese music. Approach An investigation into the mechanisms used in brutus julius, traditional Japanese music to the rose 2006, create emotional tension, with reference to direct model management, comparable examples in Western music. Note that this approach is looking for a commonality of expressive device between two cultures, allowing for the rose, a probing inquiry through comparison. A small number of real but well-chosen musical examples would be appropriate here. Title Musical continuity in Frederick Chopin's 24 piano Preludes Op.

28. Research question An investigation into brutus julius, the presence and musical significance of a recurrent motif found throughout Frederick Chopin's 24 piano Preludes. Op. 28. Approach A study of appropriate preludes that demonstrate this feature, through the use of formulaic notation and comparative analysis. Note that this approach, while still using comparative analysis, is report, more focused on the musical mechanics of a series of works by the same composer, allowing for an in-depth study within the word limit. In this case, the student would only be able to study five or six preludes, given the parameters of an extended essay. Title The music of Hildegard of define burka Bingenan explanation of 2006 its appeal and justification of its popularity. Research question An investigation into the reasons for pregnant gossip, the popularity of the music of Hildegard of report Bingen today. Approach A study of Hildegard of Bingen's musical style in comparison with other sacred music from her time, through analysis and comparison of musical examples, with particular reference to the aesthetic theory of musical expectation and inhibition.

This approach has its dangers, in acclimatization vs acclimation, the sense that it can be easy to make a supposition in a research question, without any evidence, and then try to the rose report, prove the statement by subjective and definition of meritocracy superficial comment and the rose 2006 analysis. Speech. However, at the rose, its best, this approach can allow investigation into other important areas of musical study and theory, while remaining focused on music itself. Treatment of the topic. It should be noted that the Diploma Programme music course includes components that require performance and/or composition as well as a musical investigation. An extended essay in music has a different purpose, in that the focus should be clearly on a verbal response to a research question. In order to definition, promote personal involvement in the extended essay, the use of primary sources that are locally available should be encouraged wherever possible.

However, it is the rose, appreciated that, in certain situations, students may not necessarily have access to primary musical sources. In such situations, in brutus julius, order not to restrict the topics that can be investigated, recordings of a high quality are considered acceptable sources. It is important that the the rose topic and research question reflect a firm emphasis on music, and that they do not become directed towards another subject area. Appropriate resources for music include books, textbooks, the Internet, scores, interviews, recordings, and live performances or concerts of the music being studied. The inclusion of appropriate reference material, such as music notation, audio tapes or other musical examples, with music extended essays is encouraged as long as the material is directly supportive of, and direct relevant to, the argument/evaluation. Students are expected to evaluate critically the resources consulted during the process of writing the essay by asking themselves the following questions. Which sources are vital to the support of my ideas, opinions and report assertions? Which sources do not contribute to the analysis? Students must choose a research question that is suitable for effective treatment within the of meritocracy word limit and is not of a trivial nature. Research questions that do not allow a systematic investigation that demonstrates critical musical analysis and detailed understanding are unlikely to the rose, be suitable.

In some instances, it may become clear at management, an early stage in the research that too few sources are available topermit such an investigation. In such cases, a change of focus should be made. Many different approaches to report, the research question can be appropriate, for instance: use of primary sources (music and musicians) and secondary sources (material about music) in order to establish and appraise varying interpretations analysing sources (primary and secondary) in define burka, order to explore and the rose 2006 explain particular aspects of musical techniques using primary source material for an analysis, with emphasis on a particular aspect of the vs acclimation music collecting and analysing orally transmitted and/or written music from live musicians and/or composers through recordings, possibly leading to a comparison of similar or different music. Students should also demonstrate awareness of other issues surrounding the music studied, such as the following. Do I show an awareness of the value and 2006 limitations of the acclimatization music I am studying through analysing its origin and purpose? Do I show a consistently good musical understanding in setting the research question into context and addressing it fully and effectively? Relevant outcomes of the rose this analysis should be integrated into the student's argument.

The argument should also be well substantiated and students should consider the following questions. With what evidence do I support my comments and ldr experiment gcse method conclusions? Is this evidence relevant and well founded, and not based simply on my preconceptions? Frequent reference to the assessment criteria by both the supervisor and the student will help keep a sharper focus on the project. Interpreting the assessment criteria. Please note: extended essays that do not focus on report, real music are likely to model management, score 0 in criterion A, and the rose 2006 are unlikely to score highly in 16 and gossip, criteria C, D, F and G. Criterion A: research question.

The research question can often be best defined in the form of the rose report a question. It may, however also be presented as a statement or proposition for discussion. 16 And Pregnant Gossip. It must be: specific and sharply focused appropriate to the particular area of report 2006 music being explored centred on music and not on peripheral issues such as biography or social discourses stated clearly early on in the essay. Note that larger-scale musical works or groups of pieces may limit the possibility of effective treatment n the word limit. Criterion B: introduction. The Introduction should relate the direct model research question to existing subject knowledge the student's personal experience or particular opinion is rarely relevant here. The Introduction should not be seen as an the rose 2006 opportunity for padding out an essay with a lengthy account the context of the music. Criterion C: investigation. The range of resources available will be influenced by various factors, but above all by the topic.

Students should use primary sources (scores, recordings, performances, interviews) in the first instance, with secondary sources (textbooks and the comments of other musicians) as evidential support. The proper planning of an essay should involve interrogating source material in gcse, light of the research question, so that the views of other musicians are used to support the student's own argument, and not as a substitute for that argument. It may thus be helpful for a student to challenge a statement by a musician, in reference to the music being studied , instead of simply agreeing with it, where there is the rose, evidence to support such a challenge. Definition Of Meritocracy. If students make use of Internet-based sources, they should do so critically and circumspectly in full awareness of their potential unreliability. Criterion D: knowledge and understanding of the topic studied. Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the the rose 2006 music chosen, together with its historical, social and cultural, as well as academic, contexts.

Wherever possible, this knowledge should be based at least partially on primary sources. Criterion E: reasoned argument. Students should be aware of the 16 and need to give their essays the report backbone of julius a developing argument. Personal views should not simply be stated but need to be supported by reasoned argument to persuade the reader of their v alidity. Straightforward descriptive or narrative accounts that lack analysis do not usually advance an argument and report should be avoided. Criterion F: application of analytical and evaluative skills appropriate to define burka, the subject. Students should accurately and consistently analyse technical aspects of the music (melody, harmony, rhythm , texture, tone colour, and lyrics or text), demonstrating an understanding and a persuasive personal interpretation of the music. Criterion G: use of language appropriate to the subject. Students are expected to make effective use of 2006 musical terminology and, where appropriate, notation. Notation may take a variety of 16 and forms, depending on the rose, the type of music studied.

Criterion H: conclusion. Consistent is the key word here: the conclusion should develop out of the argument and not introduce new or extraneous matter. It should not repeat the material of the introduction; rather, it should present a new synthesis in light of the discussion. Criterion I: formal presentation. This criterion relates to the extent to definition of meritocracy, which the essay conforms to academic standards about the way in which research papers should be presented. The presentation of essays that omit a bibliography or that do not give references for quotations is deemed unacceptable (level 0).

Essays that omit one of the required elementstitle page, table of contents, page numbersare deemed no better than satisfactory (maximum level 2), while essays that omit two of them are deemed poor at best (maximum level 1). In music, discographies should be included where appropriate; musical examples, and tables and charts, if relevant, should appear in the body of the essay, as close as possible to their first reference. Criterion J: abstract. The abstract is judged on the clarity with which it presents an overview of the research and the essay, not on the quality of the research question itself, nor on the quality of the argument or the conclusions. Criterion K: holistic judgment.

Qualities that are rewarded under this criterion include the following. Intellectual initiative: Ways of demonstrating this in music essays include the choice of topic and research question, locating and using a wide range of the rose sources, including some that may have been little used previously or generated for brutus speech caesar, the study (for instance, transcripts of report 2006 oral interviews). Insight and depth of define burka understanding: These are most likely to be demonstrated as a consequence of the rose report 2006 detailed research, reflection that is thorough and well informed, and reasoned argument that consistently and effectively addresses the research question. Creativity: In music essays, this includes qualities such as comparison of musical features, inventive approaches to 16 and, musical analysis and new approaches to popular topics.

collaboration essay In 1995, I was commissioned by the Pew Partnership for Civic Change to study how collaboration was being used in the United States to build and strengthen community. While there are many forms of collaboration, my research focused on one type in particularthe kind carried out by individuals, groups and organizations in the public sphere. This form of collaboration can be described as a process of shared decision-making in which all the report, parties with a stake in a problem constructively explore their differences and develop a joint strategy for action. This essay appears in 'On Collaboration' a collection edited by Marie Bak Mortensen and Judith Nesbitt (London: Tate, 2012). My report on the subject (from which the following essay has been adapted) generated a surprising amount of attention when it appeared.

It was widely cited in books and publications and 16 and gossip, reprinted in report several monographs. After concluding the study, I went on to observe and work with collaborative teams across America as well as study community leaders who practice collaboration as part of their community development work. I found that collaboration can be a powerful alternative to conventional mechanisms for effecting change, such as coalitions, task forces, and commissions. Traditional groups and organizations tend to be structured vertically. Decisions are made at the top and vs acclimation, people derive their influence and authority from their positions within the report, hierarchy.

This is direct model management, especially true in professional organizations where leadership is centralized, the the rose report 2006, work mission-driven, processes guided by procedures and statutes, and vs acclimation, internal communication mostly confined to departments, workgroups, and the rose report, committees. Collaborative groups, by contrast, are structured horizontally. Leadership, to the extent that it exists at all, is speech, broadly distributed. Job titles and professional affiliations fade into the background and people derive their influence from having their ears to the ground, from being well-connected in the community, and from being engaged in a multiplicity of report, projects. Membership usually spans silos and divisions in the community, processes are guided by norms of trust and reciprocity, and communication is more personal, more conversational, more exploratory than in formal settings.

For this reason, collaborative efforts tend to be loosely structured, highly adaptive, and inherently creative. Ldr Experiment Method. By creating spaces where connections are made, ideas are cross-fertilized, and collective knowledge is developed, collaborative teams generate rich opportunities for innovation. Report 2006. When the right people are brought together in constructive ways and with the appropriate information, they are able to direct create powerful visions and robust strategies for change. While collaboration is getting a lot of attention today, especially in report the fields of management theory and leadership studies, there is relatively little substantive research on the subject. There is, however, a growing body of literature championing its benefits. Define Burka. In the following pages, I review some of the principal sources in order to better understand: What is collaboration? How does it differ from other models of the rose, cooperation? What are the prerequisites and dynamics of effective collaboration? What makes an effective collaborative leader? What are some of the chief dangers and obstacles to successful collaboration? And how do we build more collaborative communities?

As its Latin roots com and 16 and, laborare suggest, collaboration reduced to its simplest definition means to report 2006 work together. The search for of meritocracy, a more comprehensive definition leads to a myriad of possibilities each having something to the rose 2006 offer and none being entirely satisfactory on its own. These range from the academic (a process of joint decision making among key stakeholders of a problem domain about the future of that domain) to the esoteric (an interactive process having a shared transmutational purpose). One of the more durable and widely-cited definitions comes from Barbara Gray's 1989 book, Collaborating: Finding Common Ground for of meritocracy, Multiparty Problems . Gray describes collaboration as a process through which parties who see different aspects of the rose report 2006, a problem can constructively explore their differences and search for solutions that go beyond their own limited vision of what is possible. In Collaborative Leadership , David Chrislip and Carl Larson define the process as a mutually beneficial relationship between two or more parties who work toward common goals by sharing responsibility, authority, and accountability for achieving results.

Collaboration appeals to acclimatization people from across the political spectrum, not because it offers everything to everyoneas some of the advocacy literature on the subject seems to suggestbut because it deals with a process, as distinct from a program, agenda, or outcome. Collaboration requires that we look not only at the outcomes of our efforts, whatever they happen to be, but also at the process by which we arrive at those outcomes. Collaboration might be used to the rose report resolve a neighborhood or environmental dispute. It could be a springboard for economic development in direct model a community or region. Or it could be used to promote greater civic participation and involvement. Generally speaking, the process works best when. The problems are ill-defined, or people disagree on report 2006, how the problems are defined Different groups or organizations with a vested interest depend on each other in some way. Those with a stake in a problem have yet to be identified or organized Some stakeholders have more power or resources than others Those with a vested interest have different levels of expertise and access to information about the issue.

The problems are often characterized by technical complexity and scientific uncertainty Differing perspectives on the problems lead to of meritocracy conflict or disagreement among the stakeholders Incremental or unilateral efforts to 2006 address with the ldr experiment gcse method, issue have been ineffective Existing processes for addressing the problems have proved unsuccessful. Collaborative endeavors take many forms. Some common varieties include: public-private partnerships (sometimes referred to as social partnerships)ad hoc alliances between otherwise independent organizations that span both the public and the private sectors; future commissions , also known as search conferences, in the rose which citizens and vs acclimation, community leaders analyze trends, develop alternative scenarios of the future, and establish recommendations and goals for the community; interagency collaborations aimed at improving social services to children, families, and other members of a community; online networks designed to link various civic, educational, business, and governmental institutions within a community or region; school-community partnerships designed to report 2006 foster greater collaboration between secondary schools and key community institutions; networks and coalitions loosely structured alliances among groups, organizations, and of meritocracy, citizens that share a commitment to 2006 a particular issue or place; and regional collaboratives where local governments work together to promote economic development and service delivery. COLLABORATION VS. Direct Management. OTHER MODELS OF COOPERATION.

Collaborative partnerships can be broadly grouped under two headings: those aimed at resolving conflicts and those designed to develop and advance a shared vision for the future. In both cases, the report, process is aimed at carefully defining and, if need be, redefining the issues involved before moving on to solutions. Collaboration focuses on identifying a common purpose and working toward joint decisions. This distinguishes it from other forms of cooperation that may involve shared interests but are not based on a collectively-articulated goal or vision. We cannot even begin to agree on how we should act until we have a common definition of the problem, David Mathews writes in 16 and pregnant gossip Politics for People , one that reflects an the rose report 2006, understanding of our own interests, the interests of others, and how the two diverge and converge. There are obvious similarities between cooperation and of meritocracy, collaboration, but the former involves preestablished interests while the latter involves collectively-defined goals. In What It Takes , an oft-cited 1991 monograph on report, interagency collaboration, Atelia Melaville and Martin Blank point out that a collaborative strategy is called for . where the define burka, need and intent is to change fundamentally the way services are designed and delivered. Cooperation, by contrast, merely involves coordinating existing services.

Banding together to work for common goals is not a new idea in politics. The literature is full of examples of how community organizationsreligious groups, trade unions, nonprofit groups, small businesses, civic alliancesform cooperative ventures, community interest groups, neighborhood task forces, and report 2006, political coalitions. But these efforts are rarely collaborative in the strict sense. Speech. The goal is to join forces to advance a cause, which is 2006, different from collaborating to address a collective problem or develop a joint vision for model, the future. THE PREREQUISITES FOR COLLABORATION.

For collaboration to be effective, it must be democratic and inclusive. Hierarchies of any kind get in the way of sound decision-making, just as excluding some individuals or groups with a stake in the issue can derail the process. It also requires the involvement of a wide range of community leaders, such as mayors, city council members, nonprofit directors and report, members of the local school board. In a series of case studies of define burka, successful collaboratives, David Chrislip and Carl Larson point out that each one involved many participants from several sectorsfor example, government, business, and community groupsas opposed to few participants predominantly from report 2006 one sector. The level of participation required, however, is partly a function of what kind of definition of meritocracy, collaboration is being sought. Clearly, some forms of collaborationsuch as interagency partnershipsrequire only that the relevant stakeholders be included. Chrislip and 2006, Larson emphasize that the support of high-level, visible leaders brought credibility to the effort and was an essential aspect of the success of the endeavor. According to Barbara Gray, collaboration can only method be meaningful if the the rose report 2006, parties involved are interdependent in some way.

Collaboration establishes a give and take among the stakeholders that is designed to produce solutions that none of them working independently could achieve, she says. In this way, they all depend on each other to produce mutually beneficial solutions. Some questions to ask before embarking on a collaborative venture include: What are the structural relationships between the parties and the possible power issues inherent in the collaborative arrangement? Is there a clear understanding among all the parties of the respective goals of the other participants? What form of define burka, leadership is required to facilitate the process? Does the project have some form of integrating structure, such as a cross-section of the rose, steering committees, to facilitate and coordinate decision-making and implementation? Will the project be more effective with a neutral, third-party mediator?

Should the media be involved? Does the project have enough time, money, and staff support? The process of collaboration is rarely simple and straight-forward. It typically moves through several distinct phases, some of which can be time-consuming and fraught with challenges. Generally speaking, the process begins with an analysis of the situation and define burka, a diagnosis of the 2006, key issues involved. It moves on to a definition of the fundamental mission or desired outcome. The participants then articulate a common vision and work out a plan and a timetable for meeting their goals. It most cases, the process concludes with an assessment of the outcomes and a review of speech julius caesar, lessons learned. Barbara Gray describes it as a three-phase process.

The first phase, which she calls the prenegotiation or problem-setting phase, is often the most difficult. Six issues need to be addressed at this stage: 1) the parties must arrive at the rose 2006 a shared definition of the problem, including how it relates to the interdependence of the various stakeholders; 2) the parties must make a commitment to collaborate; 3) other stakeholders need to be identified whose involvement may be necessary for the success of the endeavor; 4) the of meritocracy, parties have to acknowledge and accept the legitimacy of the other participants; 5) the the rose report 2006, parties must decide what type of convener or leader can bring the acclimatization vs acclimation, parties together; and 6) the the rose, parties must determine what resources are needed for the collaboration to proceed. During the definition, second phase, the parties identify the interests that brought them to the rose the table, determine how they differ from the ldr experiment method, interests of others, set directions and establish shared goals. Gray calls this the direction-setting phase. It is the rose 2006, characterized by six essential steps: 1) establishing ground rules; 2) setting the agenda; 3) organizing subgroups, especially if the number of issues to be discussed is large or the number of stakeholders exceeds a dozen or so people; 4) undertaking a joint information search to establish and consider the essential facts of the issue involved; 5) exploring the pros and ldr experiment gcse, cons of various alternatives; and 6) reaching agreement and settling for a course of action. The final step of the collaborative process is the the rose report 2006, implementation phase during which 1) participating groups or organizations deal with their constituencies; 2) parties garner the gcse method, support of those who will be charged with implementing the agreement; 3) structures for implementation are established; and finally 4) the agreement is monitored and 2006, compliance is define burka, ensured. Collaborative ventures obviously vary a great deal and not all of the rose 2006, them can or want to follow this general framework.

Much will depend on definition, the nature of the endeavor, the number of people or parties involved, the time-frame, and the resources at hand. The growing interest in collaboration can be seen as part of a bumpy transition away from top-down authority structures toward a new way of coordinating activities and making decisions. At their best, collaborative leaders assume the role of discussion facilitator rather than decision-maker. They put aside whatever authority, expertise, position, or influence they may have in the outside world in order to foster openness, dialogue, and deliberation within the group. The collaborative leader is one whose primary goal is to the rose convene, energize, facilitate and sustain the process over time. This form of gcse method, leadership has been variously defined as transformative, facilitative, or servant leadership. In his classic 1978 book Leadership , James MacGregor Burns described transforming leadership as a process in which one or more persons engage with each other in such a way that leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and the rose, morality.

The key to this type of leadership, he said, is the discovery of shared purpose and the interplay between motives and values. James Svara, in his book Facilitative Leadership in Local Government , expanded on this notion, saying that collaborative leaders stress empathetic communication, think in 'win-win' terms rather than seeing their interests in conflict with those of others, and use synergism to make the 16 and pregnant gossip, whole greater than the 2006, sum of the julius, parts. A number of theorists stress that one reason collaboration works as well as it does is that it empowers participants and the rose, creates a sense of ownership and buy-in within the group. When decisions are reached, they are the products group's own efforts. The process may be difficult and gcse, time-consuming, but it elicits more solid and enduring support than decisions made by a single person or a select few. Collaborative leaders understand this intuitively. Report 2006. They move the process along by sharing inspiring visions, focusing on results, strengthening relationships, being open and inclusive, bringing out the gossip, best in others, and celebrating achievement. 2006. Collaborative leadership is not a specific set of activities. It means playing whatever role is necessary to bring about real change and lasting impact in definition of meritocracy the community. It means being a catalyst, a spark plug, and channeling people's energies toward a common goal.

For all its benefits, collaboration is not always the report 2006, best course of action. The process is fraught with dangers and inherent limitations. It is notoriously time-consuming and is not suitable for brutus, problems that require quick and decisive action, for the rose 2006, example. Power inequalities among the ldr experiment, parties often thwart the process. The norms of consensus and joint decision-making sometimes require that the common good take precedence over the interests of a few. It can break down in the rose 2006 groups that are too large. And the define burka, process is meaningless when participants lack the power to implement final decisions. The literature is full of examples of poorly executed collaborations that failed to yield substantive results, ran out of funding, failed to garner enough interest or support from the the rose 2006, leadership of the community, or stalled because of irreconcilable differences between stakeholders. As Barbara Gray points out, many well-intentioned efforts to involve the public in government decisions, for example, are exercises in frustration and often exacerbate rather than improve the situation because careful attention to the process of managing differences is neglected. Some of the circumstances under which it is best not to collaborate include: 1) when one party has unchallenged power to influence the final outcome; 2) when the conflict is rooted in deep-seated ideological differences; 3) when power is unevenly distributed; 4) when constitutional issues are involved or legal precedents are sought; and when a legitimate convener cannot be found. But when groups are aware of the management, limitations of the process and are able to report work around them, they can do great things.

Consciously or not, many of us subscribe to outmoded theories of change handed down from 16 and pregnant gossip traditional leadership theory. We believe that influence occurs as a direct result of report, force exerted from direct model management one person to another. We engage in complex planning processes in the hope of producing predictable results. And we continually search for better methods of objectively perceiving and measuring the world. This approach is reflected in the predominant approach to change-making: organizing committees and task forces, creating new programs, establishing stricter regulations or more oversight, and, perhaps especially, hiring or electing better leaders.

But the report 2006, realities of public life today are dynamic and complex and no longer lend themselves to mechanistic solutions. They require rigorously multidimensional approaches that are participatory, iterative, flexible, and open-ended. In my research on management, collaboration, I have interviewed many practitioners who told me that they found their way to collaboration only after years of frustration with conventional problem-solving approaches and report 2006, a gnawing sense that there must be a better way. They stressed that traditional mechanisms for caesar, bringing about change are often exasperating, time-consuming, and ineffective. In a time of widespread frustration with politics-as-usual, collaboration represents a more promising way forward.

What has moved so many people to take on this hard work of collaboration, write Daniel Kemmis and Matthew McKinney in the rose report 2006 Collaboration and define burka, the Ecology of report 2006, Democracy , has been the widespread perception that, in all too many cases, the existing governing framework was proving itself incapable of getting the job done. To put it bluntly, the problems that people expected the government to solve were not getting solved. Building collaborative communities means finding new and better ways to work together. We need to create spaces where people can find each other, share ideas, and discover common ground. We need settings where people can receive support and be acknowledged as public actors. And we need contexts in which people can begin to imagine and act from a new sense of possibility. This essay appears in On Collaboration , a collection edited by Marie Bak Mortensen and Judith Nesbitt. On Collaboration brings together several general essays on collaboration along with case studies of numerous collaborative art initiatives carried out in the U.K. under the auspices of Tate. Introduce the Language of Opinion Writing. The very first thing we did during a writing mini-lesson was go over the language of model management opinion writing and report, how certain words, like fun and brutus speech, pretty are opinion clues because while they may be true for the rose 2006, some people, they are not true for everyone. We also discuss how other words, called transitions, are signals to your reader as to where you are in your writing: the beginning, middle or end.
