IBM Case Study: A lesson in Social Business Transformation. Late last year, I started watching and monitoring the #socialbiz hashtag on Twitter. I was in the middle of writing my book and writer, conducting in depth research of companies that were at least talking about or referring to a social business. Roman Games? One company seemed to dominate the conversation, IBM. I watched more closely and realized that there were literally hundreds of writer IBM employees collaborating with the community and adding value to the “social business” conversation. I was really impressed and wanted to ia example, learn more. Even with over 400 thousand employees, sadly I didn’t know anyone who works for IBM. And then one day, I met Dana Carr on Twitter and we started emailing back and writer vocabulary, forth. She was able to get me exclusive access (well, not really) with Jeff Schick, Vice President of Social Software who has been working for IBM for the last 23 years for an email interview. 1. What is your definition of a social business? Is IBM a social business?
Please explain. Social Business is the world of possibility that occurs when all of the on Relationship Marketing Approach, energy and opportunities that have been generated around consumer-side models such as Facebook and Twitter are focused, and brought to bear on business challenges. The stuff that has sprung up on the consumer side is just the tip of the writer vocabulary, iceberg. The real mass, the effects of the vietnam war, real power to transform, is on the business side. This is where a social framework can create new ways to writer vocabulary, enable sales forces, new ways to discover expertise, new ways to understand your organization’s culture, new ways to establish brand trust with your customers, and much more. IBM is chemistry most certainly a social business and a pioneer at that.
We’re the largest consumer of writer social technologies, and a case study for this transformation. This goes beyond our business in social software and services (IBM’s collaboration software, consulting services, analytics/social media research, conducting Jams for clients). Chemistry? We’re leading social business on all fronts – technology, policy and practice. Our social initiatives started over a decade ago and really date back to the 1970’s when our mainframe programmers started online discussion forums on the System 370 consoles. For 15 years, IBM employees have used social software to foster collaboration among our dispersed 400,000+ person global team — long before Generation Y became fixated with social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. In 1997, IBM recommended that its employees get out onto the Internet – at a time when many companies were seeking to restrict their employees’ Internet access. A few years later, in 2005, we made a strategic decision to embrace the blogosphere and to encourage IBMers to participate. In 2008, we introduced the first social computing guidelines to encompass virtual worlds and sharing of vocabulary rich media. These guidelines aimed and continue to provide helpful, practical advice to protect both IBM’ers and IBM the brand. In 2008 and again in 2010 we turned to roman emperor games, employees to re-examine our guidelines in light of ever-evolving technologies and online social tools to ensure they remain current to the needs of employees and the company. These efforts have broadened the vocabulary, scope of the existing guidelines to include all forms of social computing.
In late 2007, we opened the IBM Center for ia example, Social Software to help IBM’s global network of Researchers collaborate with corporate residents, university students and faculty, creating the industry’s premier incubator for the research, development and testing of social software that is writer “fit for business.” Recent projects we’re pursuing focus on Accounting Types and Jobs, the concept that IBM is experienced through the IBMer. People get to know IBM through our consultants, speakers, salespeople and researchers. Within our walls, we have huge stores of accrued expertise embodied in writer several Nobel laureates and thousands of doctors. We’re working to best utilize our most important asset, our people, helping to identify their strengths and osce mark, expertise and then connecting them with potential customers, partners and the knowledge seeking public visiting IBM.com. We call it the Expertise Locator. So you can see, our social initiatives run deep and have evolved with the writer vocabulary, times. But, there is Accounting one constant, as you hear about IBM’s approach to Social Business, you’ll notice that our thinking isn’t document centric.
It’s people centric. 2. Writer? I believe a social business is built upon three pillars – people (culture/leadership), process and technology. In your opinion, what should be the first priority? People. You’re employees, partners and customers are what makes your organization run.
You can’t forget about them when launching a social push, they drive the engine. When we talk about social business we talk about embracing the networks of people you have to create business value. We believe the most effective approach to osce mark schemes, enabling a social business centers around helping people discover expertise, develop social networks and vocabulary, capitalize on relationships. It helps groups of people bind together into Essay Approach, communities of writer vocabulary shared interest and coordinate efforts to effects war, deliver better business results faster. Such a culture enables deeper relationships within the organization and with customers and business partners.
a. Fourteen Points? How important is culture change to the evolution of social business? Culture change may be the most challenging component of successfully transforming into a social business. To become a social business you have to recognize that employees need to writer vocabulary, be agile, informed and able to work beyond their specific job descriptions. In order to support this, you must provide tools and the cultural incentives that allow employees more access to the right information and the right people. On Relationship Marketing? You must reduce both the cultural boundaries as well as the technical obstacles for writer vocabulary, people to connect with people and information, allowing unprecedented access. Interactive, educational and social programs have been vital to IBM’s transformation. For example, we’ve recently launched Social Business @ IBM on our internal intranet. This is a resource for of the vietnam, IBM’ers that aims to vocabulary, educate them about social media and various social initiatives taking place internally while enabling them to participate.
We host modules that provide the IBM’er with an introduction to the social web. They learn how to use social computing tools to foster collaboration, disseminate and consume news, develop networks, forge closer relationships, and build credibility. As a result, they’re better informed and prepared to take action. By making these types of tools and effects of the vietnam, information available, we’re changing how the IBM’er approaches social and writer vocabulary, twofold, changing our culture. b. How important is the effects war, creation of processes to writer vocabulary, the evolution of social business?
The evolution of Essay social business is a process in itself. An organization must go through the process of identifying market factors that are generating the need for a transformation, it must recognize the social objectives it needs to accomplish, then establish social outputs that will support the objectives and writer vocabulary, finally, executives need to determine which platforms, applications, and features they’ll need to meet desired outcomes. Chemistry? These basic principles or processes are vital to the success of a social business. Similar actions must be taken for writer vocabulary, each department and social initiative. c. How important is fourteen points technology to the evolution of social business? Technology is certainly a key factor in the evolution. An organization must adopt tools that work efficiently in order to successfully make this transformation. Writer? In that regard, IBM is drinking our own champagne, using our own social business platform to push ahead. In 2010, with 35 percent of Fortune 100 companies using IBM social software in the enterprise, IDC named IBM as the #1 social software platform company in chemistry the industry. Just this month, IDC put us on top again, so we feel pretty confident that our technology plays a vital role in the social business transformation. While social software adoption is on the rise, a growing challenge for global organizations is the ability to manage risk while harnessing insights from a wide variety of social communities and remaining compliant with their own governance policies, including practices dictated by their regulatory requirements.
We just released the newest version of IBM Connections, our social software platform, that addresses these challenges. And Jobs Essays? With these new advancements around compliance enablement, a social business can confidently activate networks of people to use a variety of collaborative tools, to improve and accelerate innovation. Social business technology is also vital in supporting the mobile workforce. We’re witnessing an explosion in the number and type of computing devices in the market today. Just one example is the growth of tablets. Writer Vocabulary? Up to 47.9 million tablet PC units are expected to be shipped this year, and 79.6 million next year, according to fourteen points, the latest J.P.
Morgan forecasts. In all, this represents a $35 billion annual revenue opportunity, says the investment firm. And they are not all iPad’s. This dizzying influx of vocabulary new devices is games causing a major disruption in the enterprise. Writer? With the emperor, mobile workforce expected to reach more than 1.19 billion by 2013, nearly 1 trillion Internet-connected devices will be in market by writer, next year, generating 20 times more mobile data by 2015. Social enabling these workers to be effective, collaborate and innovate is a major requirement for organizations. On Relationship? Accounting Types Essays? You have to go to where your customers are. Today, customers are out on writer, social networks looking for information. In order to successfully reach them, we need to be active on those platforms, and most importantly engaged with the knowledge seekers. Most business leaders understand this.
In fact, 88 percent of osce mark all CEOs who participated on the 2010 IBM CEO study picked “getting closer to the customer” as the most important dimension to realize their strategy in the next five years. But understanding the importance and actually knowing how to act on it are very different. Writer Vocabulary? Consumers are connecting with brands in fundamentally new ways. The new workforce has also played a part in our transformation. Marketing Approach? 5. Vocabulary? There are several hundred IBMers engaged on Twitter and within the social web. Is this by design or did it happen organically? Actually it’s closer to on Relationship Marketing Approach, 25,000 IBMers actively tweeting on writer, Twitter and counting. Not only are we present on Twitter but we also have over 300,000 IBMers on Linkedin and 198,000 on Facebook. This is just our external social media footprint. Some examples of IBM’s internal social media footprint today include: 17,000 individual blogs 1 million daily page views of internal wikis, internal information storing website 400,000 employee profiles on IBM Connections, IBM’s social networking initiative that allows employees to share status updates, collaborate on wikis, blogs and activity, share files. 15,000,000 downloads of employee-generated videos/podcasts 20 million minutes of LotusLive meetings every month with people both inside and outside the organization More than 400k Sametime instant messaging users, resulting in 40-50 million instant messages per day. We don’t force anyone to participate in Types social media externally or internally, but its a natural curiosity and interest for IBMers, so we educate and enable them.
We were one of the first organizations to embrace the blogosphere and encourage our employees to participate. Our own IBM bloggers were the ones to develop the company’s Blogging Policy and Guidelines which has evolved into writer, the social computing guidelines as external social platforms have sprung up and evolved. So our social web engagement is a little bit of both organic interest and careful design and education. 6. On Relationship Marketing Approach? 7. Please explain IBM’s journey to social business transformation. Are there any gaps? IBM’s journey really started back in the 1970s, as I mentioned before, when our mainframe programmers started online discussion forums on the System 370 consoles. The journey has evolved with the times, with the new workforce and is still underway. It’s important to understand that our transformation has not been limited to only one department, region, business process, or role, its company wide, a global transformation. IDC published the results of their Social Business Survey* identifying that the top three challenges associated with using enterprise social software, they are getting people to participate, measuring the impact on business goals, and finding the time to roman olympic games, use another tool. Other challenges include security, governance, and privacy concerns. Writer Vocabulary? IBM has not been immune to any of these. This seems to relate more to the cogency of the evidence, given its relevance, but it secures a place in writer the exposition of the roman, subject because the writer, qualification of emperor, sufficiency relates to writer, it. The impact of HRA 1998 on burden of proof and confession. Here, Court of Appeal ruled that the case against Woolmington was so strong that he would have to demonstrate the accidental nature of the shooting.
However, the House of Lords allowed the appeal5 stating that however bad things looked for Woolmington, he was allowed the benefit of ia example, any doubt6, and writer vocabulary, he does not bear a legal as well as an osce schemes evidential burden. However, as recognized by the Viscount, there are exceptions7 referred to writer, as reverse-onus provisions. As Lord Steyne stated in R v Lambert8 'there are . The impact of HRA on burden of proof and bad character. Sexual Offences Act 19564, s.2(2) Homcide Act5 and s.74(2) Police and Criminal Evidence (PACE) Act 19846. Statutes may also cast the burden of proof on the accused by necessary implication as enshrined in chemistry ia example the leading case of R v Turner.7 This branch of the law of evidence has undergone considerable change in the wake of the passage of the Human Rights Act (HRA) 1998. Since s.3 HRA 19988 requires courts to interpret English legislation so far as possible in a manner compatible with the Convention, it immediately poses the question as to whether it is ever permissible for the law to cast the legal burden of proof on the. Individuals will be assessed against the national DSPD criteria only writer, if they have a history of violent or sexual behaviour, and if there is evidence to suggest the chemistry, person has severe personality disorder.
Only people who have committed a crime will be detained in prison and those detained in hospital will have rights and safeguards under the Mental Health Act 1983. The DSPD programme works with the most difficult and dangerous persons in vocabulary society, and it faces a range of challenges in terms of assessment, treatment and management of this group, it also aims to deliver an effective service and the long-term prospects of reducing re-offending. The provisions in sections 34-38 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 create more problems than they solve. Their sil?n?? should be regarded as ?vid?n?? ?g?inst them. Abolitionists also argue that the ?rimin?l justice process should be a level playing field with similar rules applying to both the prosecution and the defence. They contend that it is unfair that the defence should be permitted to decline to make any response whatever to investigators and even within the ??urtroom while the ??li?? and the Crown have to roman emperor games, let him or her know what their allegations are and what their ?vid?n?? It is then up to the party trying the writer vocabulary, fact i.e. judge or jury to Accounting and Jobs, decide if the legal burden is discharged. The evidential burden is defined as merely a burden to produce evidence. It is the burden of adducing evidence or raising an arguable case.
At the start of a trial, the prosecution has the evidential burden to produce evidence on every element of the offence charged. If the prosecution cannot raise a 'prima facie' (by first instance) It has long been acknowledged that the writer vocabulary, law in this area is highly unsatisfactory in its complexity and uncertainty. The Criminal Law Revision Committee in 1972, and the Runciman Royal Commission in 1973 recommended continuation of the scheme of general exclusion, but subject to slightly different exceptions, the latter also recommending that the Law Commission should consider it. In 1994 the Law Commission was asked to do so; it produced a consultation paper in 1996 prior to fourteen points, publishing its final report in 2001 mentioned above. In the interval, between viewing the slides and being tested for recall, participants were spilt into two groups and writer, asked ten questions about what they had seen. Of The Vietnam. Group 1 were asked questions which were entirely consistent with the original film, in contrast to group 2 who were given the writer, same questions except one which was changed to of the vietnam war, a question which conflicted with the original witnessed event. After one week, all of the participants were asked a further ten questions, and for the final question it was a conflicting question.
How reliable is Eyewitness Testimony? This study provides evidence that the language used in a question can distort recall. When questioned later about the amount of glass at the scene more of the vocabulary, participants that had been in the 'smashed' condition reported seeing glass than the participants in the 'hit' condition, when actually there was none. Showing that information given after the effects, event can alter a witness memory of the original event. Loftus and Zanni (1974) as cited in Eysenck and writer, Keane (2000) found that even trivial differences in the way a question is asked can create false memories.
When psychologists act as expert witnesses a number of Essay Approach, issues are raised surrounding the admissibility of their evidence - Discuss these issues with reference to vocabulary, eyewitness testimony and domestic violence. In this essay, it will describe approaching psychologists in courtroom for expert witness and their admissibility of testimony in two main cases such as eyewitness testimony and domestic violence (e.g. battered woman syndrome). Finally, this essay will describe there are different limitation, solutions and future perspective surrounding the roman, admissibility of expert evidence. In the 19th century, an expert witness served the court rather than the litigants (Landsman, 1995). However, in nowadays, expert witnesses are recruited by trial attorneys and rarely by writer vocabulary the judge. It is on Relationship Approach time the rule against vocabulary, hearsay evidence in criminal proceedings was abolished and brought into line with the rule in civil proceedings. Discuss.
However the hearsay rule in operation is fourteen points not quite as simple as it first seems. There is a distinction made between original evidence and writer, hearsay evidence. Whether a matter is hearsay, and effects of the vietnam war, inadmissible or not depends on the purpose the evidence is produced for. For example, witness A stating I saw X stab Y would be original evidence. Vocabulary. Witness B stating I saw A crying because she said she saw X stab Y would be inadmissible hearsay if its purpose was to prove X as a murderer. Analysis of Fingerprint Evidence using Digital Imaging Techniques. The CCD acts like a bucket holding the electrons. The CCD's can be cascaded into arrays in which the electrons can be efficiently moved from roman emperor games, one cell to another over long distances to a final readout destination. The reading, which is taken from each array, is directly proportional to the light intensity at that point in the captured image.
So just as in writer conventional photography where silver halide crystals record the Essay on Relationship Approach, level of light intensity, the vocabulary, photo diode found in a digital system does exactly the same job. The standard definition of hearsay as found in the widely used Black's Law Dictionary. The hearsay rule generally disallows the use of out of court statements as evidence of the truth of the matters asserted in that statement. However in countries like Malaysia, the parliament has come up with a regulation to allow hearsay as evidence. That regulation is the Esential (Security Cases) Regulations (ESCAR) Offences. The Attorney General in Malaysia can designate any offences as an ESCAR prosecution. Marketing. This procedure directly indicts the vocabulary, accused to trial by the High Court Justice without a jury.
Witnesses need not identify themselves when they testify. Hearsay is admissible and giving the chemistry ia example, same weight as direct evidence. 'The hearsay rule ought to be abolished. Its exceptions are complex and lead to the arbitrary exclusion of cogent evidence' - Discuss. The rule thus obliges the prosecution to call X as a witness to give direct evidence that she saw D take the writer, book.2 Reasons in favour of Hearsay rules Why do we need a rule that prevents or restricts evidence being given by anyone? * Ambiguity of fourteen points, Narration Language is ambiguous and several meanings can often be ascribed to the same word. It may be that only the maker of the statement knows what he meant when he used the particular words in question.
Impact of writer vocabulary, Art 6(2) of the European Convention on Human Rights on Accounting Types and Jobs Essays the burden of proof in criminal trial. It?s deemed regardless of the principle set down in Woolmington?s case. In 1996, Ashworth and writer, Blake have demonstrated the extent to which Parliament derogates from Woolmington principle in Essay on Relationship Marketing relation to indictable offences. Their research found that no fewer than 40 per cent of offences triable in the Crown Court violate the presumption of innocence by requiring the defendant to prove a statutory defence or disprove at least one element of the offence. (c) Implied Statutory Reversal There are number of cases where an enactment may be constructed as impliedly imposing a legal burden on the accused. Surveillance Evidence.
This paper will attempt to assess the current law and its merits and conclude with some effective reform recommendations to writer, how the law might be improved in this area. It was then the decision of the European Court of Human Rights in the infamous case of Malone v UK which triggered the introduction of the Interception of Marketing Approach, Communications Act 1985. During this case the Vice-Chancellor observed the ECHR decision in Klass v FRG and recognised that telephone tapping was ?a subject crying out for legislation.? The court held that the UK did not meet the writer vocabulary, requirement of being ?in accordance with the Essay on Relationship Approach, law? under Article 8 of the ECHR and this case subsequently brought in the first piece of statutory footing for interception of communications in the UK. Good conclusions usually refer back to the question or title and address it directly - for example by writer vocabulary using key words from the title. How well do you think these conclusions address the title or question? Answering these questions should help you find out. Do they use key words from the title or question? Do they answer the question directly? Can you work out the question or title just by reading the conclusion? Conclusion With the essay discussed above, it has been shown that the enactment of CJA do in fact rectified most of the flawed area of the osce schemes, common law rules of hearsay. However, it is unfortunate that some problems have on the other hand emerged from the CJA itself.
The res gestae exceptions formulated under the new law seemed to have prevented the court from exercising their power in writer examining the reliability of evidence and the function of inclusionary discretion makes other provisions appear to be unnecessary. In conclusion, research on the psychological testimony began almost 100 years ago. In the accumulated research the eyewitness testimony can be far from perfect, and there are many factors that affect eyewitness reports. The use of expert psychological testimony has increased in on Relationship recent years with a concomitant increase in the range of vocabulary, cases. The psychologists allowed to give expert testimony are a very complex question because the issues of admissibility of psychological evidence are still problematic in some cases. From the limitation as shown before, the main problems influenced the Marketing, admissibility of writer, expert witness in court are the legal controversy, battle of the experts and hired guns. In the future perspective, more realistic research is needed, and research should explore age differences in eyewitness testimony, the testimony of crime victims and techniques to improve the accuracy of testimony. Effects Vietnam War. Nevertheless, in some cases it can provide valuable information to the courts. Nov 16, 2017 Writer vocabulary,
Point/Counterpoint: Paying College Athletes. The notion of vocabulary, paying college football players has been an mark schemes ongoing debate since the early 1900’s. With current television revenue resulting from writer vocabulary, NCAA football bowl games and March Madness in basketball, there is fourteen points now a clamoring for writer vocabulary compensating both football and basketball players beyond that of an athletic scholarship. This article takes a point/counterpoint approach to the topic of paying athletes and may have potential implications/consequences for college administrators, athletes, and coaches. Fourteen Points! Dr. John Acquaviva defends the current system in which colleges provide an athletic scholarship that provides a “free college education” in return for playing on the university team. Dr.
Dennis Johnson follows with a counterpoint making the case that athletes in these sports should receive compensation beyond that of a college scholarship and forwards five proposals to vocabulary pay the athletes. Key words: pay for play, athletic scholarships. Introduction: History of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) The idea of paying college athletes to compete dates back to what is considered to be the first intercollegiate competition. In a regatta between Harvard and vietnam, Yale Universities, Harvard used a coxswain who was not even a student enrolled at the Ivy League school (5). Much like today’s universities whose appetites for appearances in writer, corporate-sponsored “big money” football bowl events; Harvard may have used the non-student to please regatta sponsor Elkins Railroad (23). In the late 1800’s, football played by college teams was a brutal sport but enjoyed by many fans. However, from 1900 to 1905, there were 45 players who died playing the sport (22).
This prompted President Theodore Roosevelt to summon the presidents of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, and threaten them with a ban unless the sport was modified. As a result of that meeting, a group of 62 university presidents convened to Essay Marketing form the Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1906. This group evolved into the NCAA in 1910, but as a group it only possessed supervisory power (22). College football became even more popular in writer, the period of 1920-1940. Mark Schemes! This was a time when commercialism in the educational system was being questioned on a variety of writer, levels. One such fundamental question was posed in 1929 by Howard Savage, a staff member of the emperor olympic Carnegie Foundation. He raised a question in an article entitled Athletics in American College (originally published in 1930 but reprinted in 1999) “whether an institution in the social order whose primary purpose is the vocabulary development of the intellectual life can at the same time serve an Essay agency to promote business, industry, journalism, and organized athletics on an extensive commercial basis? More importantly, the report asked “can it (the university) concentrate its attention on securing teams that win, without impairing the sincerity and vigor of its intellectual purpose” (9, p.495)?
Savage also states that “alumni devices for recruiting winning teams constitutes the most disgraceful phase of recent intercollegiate athletics” (9, p. 495). In sum, the original 1929 report claimed that “big time” college sports were not educational, but were entirely financial and commercial. Athletes during the early and mid-1900’s were routinely recruited and paid to play; and there were several instances where individuals representing the writer vocabulary schools were not enrolled as students. Osce! For example, there is one report of a Midwestern university using seven members of its team that included the town blacksmith, a lawyer, a livery man, and four railroad employees (5). Other athletes at writer colleges were given high paying jobs for which they did little or no work. In 1948, the NCAA adopted a “Sanity Code” that limited financial aid for athletes to fourteen points tuition and fees, and required that aid otherwise be given based on need (5). In the early 1950’s, with the threat of several southern schools bolting from the NCAA, the vocabulary code was revised to Essay on Relationship Marketing allow athletic scholarships to cover tuition, fees, and a living stipend. However, by the mid-1950’s many schools were still struggling with the issue of offering athletic scholarships.
Some university presidents ultimately decided to maintain the principles of amateurism and further serve the writer mission of higher education. Those were presidents of universities that today make up the Ivy League. They concluded that it was not in the best interest of their universities to award athletic scholarships, and have remained steadfast even today. After passing Title IX in the mid 1970’s, the NCAA absorbed the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) and began to govern women’s sport at vietnam the collegiate level. Over the past 50 years, the NCAA has also expanded into three divisions with a multitude of championship events on a yearly basis (20). There are more than 1,300 member institutions that represent an estimated 400,000 student athletes who participate in sport (21). Vocabulary! The result of this growth and development are enormous increases in revenue. NCAA President Mark Emmert reports the NCAA revenues for chemistry ia example the 2010-11 fiscal year is projected at $757 million, of which $452.2 million will go to Division I members (14). While seemingly operating in a purely capitalistic/professional atmosphere, the writer NCAA continues to endorse an amateurism concept in college athletics.
These competing, and often contradictory, values lead some college athletes in Accounting Essays, big time football and basketball programs to question the status quo of the vocabulary present system through their words and actions. For example, many athletes are still attempting to get their “piece of the pie,” albeit under the table. And so it leads to our point-counterpoint. Point: College Athletes Should Not Be Paid. The intensity of the vietnam war argument to pay college athletes has escalated in the past few years. Perhaps it’s because of the current economic climate and everyone, including amateur athletes is looking for vocabulary ways to make money? Or maybe it’s because many higher learning institutions have given the public access to their annual budget and readers focus on the profit of select athletic programs? Or maybe it is due to the absurd coaches’ salaries and the money that colleges make from football bowl games and basketball tournaments? Regardless, this has magnified the fact that the athletes see none of these profits and thus begs the simple question: “Where’s my share?” Perhaps a fair question, but to understand this argument better, a healthy debate is on Relationship Marketing needed.
So, here are some points to consider. Colleges and universities provide an invaluable and writer vocabulary, vital service to our communities: education. Effects Of The! A now-famous bumper sticker once read: “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” To address that very slogan, the U.S. census bureau, as reported by Cheesman-Day and Newberger (7), expressed this best when they reported that the writer vocabulary lifetime earnings for those with a college degree are over $1 million dollars more than non-graduates. Despite such a statistic, essays and fourteen points, op-ed columns continue to pour in from those who favor paying student-athletes while simultaneously refusing to acknowledge or accept the writer value of a college education. Is a college education priceless or not? A sports-journalist in chemistry, a recent national radio interview proposed that any argument against vocabulary, paying college athletes based on the sole reason that education is the prize is of the vietnam war “antiquated”. But what seems antiquated and even shortsighted is the belief that paying a college athlete some (or even a lot of) money will solve all or even some of student’s long-term issues.
The fear of the writer NCAA, as it should be, is that the roman emperor olympic mere notion of paying college athletes undermines the university’s primary purpose – education, something far more valuable than a modest annual stipend proposed by many. If it currently appears that the universities “don’t really care” about the writer athlete, paying them would intensify that belief, not dissolve it. The irony in this dispute is roman olympic games that student-athletes do cost the university a substantial amount of writer vocabulary, money each year. For example, a full scholarship over four years can range between $30,000 and $200,000 depending if the institution is public or private (29). But let’s address this main point head on: There is an obvious lack of appreciation of a college degree from those in roman games, favor of paying athletes, and until a genuine gratitude for this concept develops, this argument will probably continue to linger. Point #2: There Are Problems with Payment. Despite the well-documented scandals and writer, corruption in college athletics (30), many would probably agree that paying athletes would exponentially increase the need for intense NCAA oversight – an enormous task by all accounts. Plus, there are the fourteen points practical issues to consider. Writer Vocabulary! For example, how much should the athletes get paid and will payments be based on performance? What if the athlete gets hurt?
What if the effects of the war athlete is writer a bust and despite remaining on chemistry ia example the team, doesn’t start or even play at all? – Issues that seem to raise far more questions than answers. But perhaps most important – What will happen to the non-revenue sports at the colleges who lose money from all of their sports programs – including football and basketball? It has been shown that only a fraction of Division I football and men’s basketball programs turn a profit (24, 20). The other Division I football and basketball programs as well as sports such as baseball, softball, golf, hockey, women’s basketball (minus a couple of notable programs), and vocabulary, just about Essay on Relationship Approach all Division II sports not only fail to make money, but actually drain their athletic budgets. The outcome here would be inevitable: Forcing athletic departments to pay its football and writer, basketball players would result in the eventual elimination of most, if not all, of the non-revenue sports. Is that what we want? We cannot afford to be myopic on this issue. That is, there are only a limited number of programs that make big money, but yet there are hundreds of schools who absorb big losses at the cost of providing athletes a place to compete and earn a degree. Vietnam War! The purpose of the NCAA, along with Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), Little League, and dozens of other organized forms of amateur sport is to provide a venue to vocabulary play these sports – something we should not take for granted. The problem is chemistry that some have shifted in writer, thinking that playing an organized sport is a right, whereas it still stands as a privilege. Point #3: The University Offers More Than an Education.
Concerts, lecture series by prominent people, on-stage productions, movies, intramural sports, fitness facilities, and chemistry ia example, a variety of clubs are all part of the typical university experience. Most students agree that colleges are self-contained acres of vocabulary, learning and socializing, all which takes place in a safe environment. It’s common for schools to subsidize the above-mentioned on-campus activities by adding fees to the tuition – which means that it’s free to a full-scholarship athlete. Other benefits to the athlete include the regular use of pristine gyms, well-manicured fields, athlete-only (and often team-only) workout facilities, sports medicine care, the opportunity to travel via away games, specialized meal plans and free foot gear and roman, athletic attire. In addition, athletes are improving their trade from the best coaching minds in the sport; not to mention having access to writer vocabulary some of the best nutrition and strength/conditioning personnel. And perhaps the chemistry ia example most overlooked benefits are that the school provides the vocabulary player with high-profile name recognition, a dedicated fan base, media exposure, and a competitive atmosphere with proven rivals, all of fourteen points, which took decades, effort and money for each institution to writer vocabulary establish. Point #4: The Athletic Department Has Its Role. Keep in fourteen points, mind that student-athletes are not employees of the vocabulary university, rather they are students first and athletes second. The university can indeed make money from the sports programs; however, for those that do, the osce mark money simply goes back into the athletic program to fund the non-revenue sports (24). In fact, every year the NCAA sponsors over 80 national championships in three divisions, demonstrating the range and depth of vocabulary, their organization (20).
While it is true that the champion in football and men’s basketball (and most other sports for chemistry ia example that matter) seem to come from a relatively small pool of universities, it might be safe to assume that paying athletes would create an even bigger disparity since so few universities actually make money. Writer Vocabulary! Let’s face it, we are an underdog-loving country, and Types, paying athletes would all but ensure that teams like Butler University, who made it to the Final Four in consecutive tournaments (2010 and 2011), will never do it again. From the moment the full-scholarship papers are signed, each participant’s role is very clear: Schools accept the vocabulary responsibility of the student’s tuition, meal plan, and boarding, while the athlete is provided with the ia example opportunity to earn a degree, engage in college life and play their favorite sport in a well-organized, and often high profile fashion. The document signed by each student-athlete describes this agreement in an unmistakable manner. Although wordy and at times complex – a necessity due to the nature of the agreement – there’s no vagueness in the general arrangement or a hidden agenda from vocabulary, either party (10). Chemistry! A failure to vocabulary honor the basic premise of any such contract would cause all forms of business – big or small – to crumble. Effects! If for some reason the university could be held liable for entrapment or some other form of vocabulary, dishonesty, then their athlete’s argument would stand on Essay Approach firmer ground. But frankly, the details of this agreement are well known by all involved, and rather strangely, no one seems to mind when signing them.
In conclusion, it should be noted that any NCAA improprieties or blatant corruption may have a carry-over effect into empathizing with the position given here. Vocabulary! While corruption and other related-concerns are legitimate and need investigation, paying college athletes still remains a separate debate. It is vital to chemistry ia example this process to view each NCAA issue independently and avoid making judgments on them as a whole. Vocabulary! The position here is that, like many organizations, the NCAA should not be dismissed or discredited on one issue due to the mishandling of others. Further, if the fourteen points contention is that many student athletes enter college unprepared or that athletics takes up too much time to excel (or even earn a degree), those are separate, but much needed arguments, and are not related to the issue of paying athletes. Now more than ever, we live in an era of entitlement. At one time our country viewed the writer chance at higher education as a priceless commodity. Of The War! However, it now seems that a college education is not held in writer, the same esteem and Accounting Types, worse yet, some see it as simply an opportunity to earn money.
Although it is now evident that there has been a failure to convince much of the public of the true value of an writer education, keeping college athletes as pure amateurs remains the right thing to do. Counter Point: Athletes in emperor olympic games, “Big-Time” Sports Should Be Paid. The argument that a college athletic scholarship is an equal quid pro vocabulary, quo for fourteen points a college education has been utilized since athletic scholarships were approved by the NCAA in 1950’s. My colleague makes one point that is totally accurate – a college graduate can in fact make a great deal more money over a lifetime when compared to non-graduates. However, the writer vocabulary remainder of the author’s points are half-truths and in reality just plain falsehoods.
For instance, a “full athletic scholarships” do not provide a “free” education (as it does not cover all costs incurred from matriculation to graduation. Fourteen Points! In many cases, the university does not live up to its end of the bargain of providing an education; as evidenced by the dismal number in writer, the graduation rates, especially among African Americans. Osce Mark Schemes! Furthermore, the athletic scholarship is only a one-year (renewable) agreement that can be terminated by the coach or university in any given year for vocabulary any reason. In debating the pay-for-play issue in osce mark, college athletics, the history of the vocabulary governing body (i.e., currently the chemistry NCAA), their mission and writer vocabulary, view of amateurism, the war past history of writer vocabulary, college athletes benefitting financially, and the degree to which athletes benefit from the university experience must all be examined. The counter point section of this paper addresses each point made by of the war my colleague. Using the Eitzen (12) analogy comparing the NCAA and big-time athletic programs to the old southern plantation system will be the underpinning wellspring for the subject of athlete exploitation and the financial benefits enjoyed by the university derived from that plantation-like exploitation. An economic viewpoint will be presented to demonstrate the cartel-like atmosphere held by the NCAA while maintaining the writer illusion of on Relationship, amateurism. Finally, five proposals that outline means to promote pay-for-play in NCAA Division I football and men’s basketball will be presented. The arguments that follow are specifically tailored for writer vocabulary those two sports at schools who receive bonus money from the NCAA, as those universities and their coaches enjoy considerable revenue from TV contracts and mark, sponsorships generated by bowl games and “March Madness” appearances.
Point #1: Athletic Scholarships Provide a “Free Education” is not correct. As mentioned, in the 1950’s the NCAA approved adding living stipends to athletic scholarships that previously included only writer, tuition and fees. Today, the “full ride” scholarship can only Essay on Relationship Marketing, include tuition, fees, room, board, and books. And as mentioned in the previous section, in some cases, depending on the school attended, that scholarship can be worth anywhere from $30,000 to $200,000, although the figures $20,000 to $100,000 over a four year period might be more accurate. Vocabulary! In any case, that still does not cover the full cost of attending college. The Collegiate Athletes Coalition (CAC) estimates that NCAA scholarships are worth about ia example $2000 less than the cost of attending a university, as it does not account for expenses such as travel and sundries. Former Nebraska head football coach and United States Congressman, Tom Osborne (R-NE), calculates the gap between scholarship funding and the actual cost of attendance to be closer to writer vocabulary $3,000. Even former NCAA President, Myles Brand, indicated that he favored increasing scholarship limits: “Ideally, the value of an athletically related scholarship would be increased to cover the full-cost of attendance, calculated at between $2,000 to $3000 more per Approach year than is currently provided, I favor this approach of providing the full cost of attendance” (23, p.232).
So yes, the scholarship can be seen as pay for play, or at the very least, a quid pro writer vocabulary, quo for services rendered during a four year period. However, even with a full scholarship, an athlete will have to osce mark pay somewhere between $8,000 and $12,000 out of pocket to bridge the cost-of-living gap. Writer! Therefore, the full athletic scholarship does not provide a “free” education. Thus question remains: is the full scholarship a fair and equitable deal for the athlete? Athlete Exploitation-The Plantation System. Eitzen (12) among others (27) makes the analogy that the NCAA operates like the “plantation system” of the old south. The coaches are the overseers who get work from the laborers (players) who provide riches for the masters (universities) while receiving little for effects vietnam war their efforts. Perhaps slightly over-stated (obviously the athlete is vocabulary not a slave, but maybe an indentured servant), the student–athlete is dominated, managed, and controlled, and they don’t receive a wage commensurate to their contribution as expressed in fourteen points, dollars earned by the university. Eitzen notes that athletes are sometimes mistreated physically and mentally and writer vocabulary, are often denied the rights and freedoms of effects of the vietnam war, other citizens.
Ultimately, they have no real democratic recourse in an unjust system. There are other similarities to the plantation analogy. Writer Vocabulary! Slaves were not free to olympic leave the plantation much like an athlete cannot get out of a letter of intent (without penalty) and/or transfer without the penalty of sitting out a year. Much like the vocabulary slaves who had no right to privacy, athletes are subject to mark mandatory drug testing (even though their coaches/masters are not tested), room checks, and writer vocabulary, limits on where they can and cannot go in the community. Mark! The athletes can be prohibited from political protests and the right to assemble. And finally, they can be subjected to mental cruelty and physical abuse (e.g., early morning torture sessions), all in order to create obedient slaves; student athletes. Furthermore, collegiate athletics is often the only game in town for many of writer, these athletes.
For instance, football players must be in their third year of on Relationship Marketing Approach, college or over writer the age of 21 to enter the National Football League (NFL). Basketball players, on effects vietnam the other hand, must attend college for one year or ultimately sit out a year before they can enter the National Basketball Association (NBA). Thus, the writer college game has become a “feeder system” similar to a minor professional league and it is in reality, “the only game in town.” Point #2: Athletes Don’t Know the “Real” Deal. My colleague is partially correct in fourteen points, that most student athletes know that they are getting a scholarship that will allow them to go to school and play a sport. However, many don’t know the “real deal” as they generally have very little understanding they are about to enter a “plantation-like” system in which their scholarship in vocabulary, not guaranteed (i.e., renewable yearly) and can be terminated at any time. On Relationship Marketing Approach! Student-athletes are also a led to believe that they will play and receive a college degree while possibly picking up a few fringe benefits along the way.
Take, for example, the recent stories regarding players like Reggie Bush, Cam Newton, or the players at Ohio State who received money and/or other benefits as a result of vocabulary, playing football. Even though student athletes know they will not get directly paid for playing, many desire and even expect some form of compensation. Slack (25) surveyed 3,500 current and retired football players in 1989 only to find that 31% had received under the table money during their college careers and 48% knew of others who had received payments. This seems to imply that while many recruits may indeed know “the deal”, they display their discontent by accepting payments or other benefits not currently allowed by Essay on Relationship Approach the NCAA. In reality, the statement “athletes know the deal” with regard to writer academic achievement and degree completion seems to ia example lack substance. Dr. Nathan Tublitz, co-chair of the writer vocabulary Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletes, an organization of 51 faculty senates whose purpose is to remind college presidents, athletic directors, and coaches that student athletes are students first. He points out that: “…schools aren’t doing these kids any favors by admitting them when it’s unlikely that they will succeed academically. We bring 17 year-old kids, some of them from the inner city and we wine and dine them.
They have female chaperones. We put them up in fancy hotels. Fourteen Points! They come here and see an incredibly fancy locker room with individual TV screens, air conditioning and videogames. They go in and see the new football stadium and the new $200 million basketball arena. They see a medical training facility that is stunningly beautiful with waterfalls, treadmill pools, and the sate-of-the-art medical and writer vocabulary, dental equipment. They come here and are treated like royalty. Until they break a leg or get put on the second string and they get set aside. Many don’t earn a degree. Ia Example! They don’t have the training or the vocabulary skills to be independent after they leave the fourteen points university.
They’re lost (28, p.D10).” When the scholarship is signed, the athlete and his family have reasonable expectations which include efforts by the coaching staff and university administration to meet all obligations of the contract. Additionally, my colleague notes, “that failure to honor the basic premise of writer vocabulary, any such contract would cause all forms of business – big or small – to crumble.” If the NCAA and Essay on Relationship Marketing, athletic departments in higher education are a business, why are they allowed to act in writer vocabulary, a cartel-like fashion? And finally, do student athletes really know the “deal” when they penned their name on national signing day? It appears they don’t. Point #3: The University Offers More than Education-It’s Possible-But Not Probable. Academic Detachment. My colleague also makes the claim that the university offers more than an education (e.g., concerts, lectures, intramurals, and clubs) in osce schemes, settings that enrich the college experience. Due to the plantation effect, however, many athletes are not able to take advantage of those events. For instance, few if any of the scholarship athletes would be allowed to play in an intramural contest for the coach’s fear of injury. Student athletes are also over-scheduled with study halls, practices, weight training sessions, film study, individual workouts, more practice, travel, and competition; all in an attempt to help athletes maintain focus on vocabulary their sport.
Adler and Adler (1) spent five years recording systematic information regarding the athletes’ lives in a big-time college basketball program. After observing, interviewing, and traveling with them, they concluded that big-time basketball and being seriously engaged in Essay Approach, academics were not compatible. They also found that freshmen had a period of optimism regarding academics when they first arrived on campus, but after about two semesters they found that the vocabulary social isolation combined with the fatigue of training kept them from becoming involved in academic life. Positive feedback these basketball players earned was always athletic-related and not academic. They soon learned what they had to do to stay eligible. Coaches made sure they scheduled classes that did not interfere with practices.
Ultimately, the researchers realized that academic detachment was encouraged by the peer culture, and because of their social status (e.g., big man on campus), it became difficult for them to focus on academics. Coakley (8) reported that not all of the athletes in the Adler Adler (1) study experienced academic detachment. Those who entered college well-prepared with appropriate high school courses, strong parental support and an ability to develop relationships outside of sport were able to succeed in the classroom. It’s important to note that too many minority athletes from low socioeconomic environments struggle in academics – an issue that is often perpetuated by the coaches. For instance, Robert Smith, former running back for Minnesota Vikings and pre-med student while at Ohio State, needed two afternoon labs in the same semester. Since the labs conflicted with practice, coaches suggested that he drop them because of the mark schemes commitment he made to play football.
Against the wishes of the coaching staff, Smith took the classes but was forced to sit out the season as red shirt athlete; a further example of the plantation effect. Benson (3) noted that one perspective was missing from the literature included a full expression from the black athletes point of view. Benson conducted a qualitative interview study of 12 African American students at a DI football program where the graduation rate was 31-40% for black football players compared to 60-70% of white football players. The results in this instance cannot be generalized due to the small sample size (N=12), but it does provide a snapshot of the thoughts regarding education and athletics of this group. Further, they reflect the writer vocabulary results obtained by Accounting Types and Jobs Essays Adler Adler (1). Another major finding of the Benson (3) study was that the marginal academic performance was created by a series of interrelated practices engaged in by all significant members of the academic setting, including peers, coaches, advisors, teachers, and the student athletes themselves. It began in the recruitment, and continued through the first year. Black student athletes received the vocabulary message that school was not important, and that as time passed, they had no real control over their destiny in the classroom. It was simply a matter of survival to keep the grade point average (GPA) to a point to be eligible. They all felt like the coaches did not “walk the talk” in terms of academics.
They would just talk the academic game in public but then in reality they would have “fits” if classes ever interfered with the program. Simply put, student athletes learned it was a matter of survival and a basic expectation to fourteen points maintain a GPA just high enough to remain eligible to compete (3). “The Black Dumb Jock”. Harry Edwards (13) discussed the creation of the “black dumb jock” image prior to writer studies completed by Alder and schemes, Alder (1), Benson (3), and Coakley (8). He (i.e., Edwards) theorized that they were not born, but rather systematically created. The previous mentioned studies serve as evidence to support his statement (1, 3, 8). Vocabulary! The exploitation of athletes is not solely an NCAA issue but a societal one. Of The Vietnam! For example, Fred Butler was passed on through elementary, middle, and high school because he was a good football player. Writer Vocabulary! He graduated from high school reading at osce mark schemes a second grade level and writer, went to El Camino Junior College.
There he took a number of physical activity classes while hoping to mark schemes be drafted into the NFL. When no offer came, he played at writer vocabulary California State University-Los Angeles for a year and a half. When again no offer came and his eligibility expired, he failed out of school within months with no degree, no offers to play pro ball, and no skills to use for employment. And he still could not read! (18). Similarly, Former NFL player Dexter Manley testified before a Senate Committee that he played four years at Essay on Relationship Marketing Oklahoma State University, only to writer vocabulary leave the school illiterate. And the sad feature is that academic detachment from the fourteen points university athletic department perspective doesn’t seem to be an issue because there are always more impoverished (and usually minority) kids waiting to come in and play. Thus, student athletes in many cases cannot take advantage of the many extras offered by a college education.
Why do athletes accept a diluted academic experience or the corruption of writer vocabulary, doctored transcripts, phantom courses, surrogate test takers, and tutors writing papers? Perhaps it is because they are disenfranchised under the effects of the current system, and will lose scholarships, starting roles, and writer vocabulary, eligibility if they complain. George Will argued that “College football and basketball are, for many players, vocations, not avocations, and academics are unsubstantiated rumors” (12, p.5). So do full scholarship athletes get a chance to effects vietnam take advantage of all the extras of the university experience? More than likely it is not the case especially when they can’t even hope for a meaningful degree. NCAA as a Cartel. Kahn (16) examined the operation of the writer vocabulary college football and basketball systems of the roman emperor olympic NCAA and offers lessons about the determinants and effects of supply and demand. Specifically he utilizes economic principles to calculate the value of college football player to a university. He notes that total ticket revenues for football and men’s basketball were $757 million in 1999, total value that exceeded the total ticket sales for all of professional baseball, football, and hockey that year.
A figure indicating that the NCAA is a very successful business entity engaged in capitalism. According to the cartel theory, the NCAA has “enforced collusive restrictions on payments for factors of production, including player compensation, recruiting expenses, and assistant coaches salaries; it has restricted output; and it has defeated potential rival groups (16, p. 211).” He notes, along with others (11, 15, 16, 30), that the NCAA can impose sanctions that range from vocabulary, scholarship reductions, elimination from fourteen points, post-season play to program death penalties (e.g., Southern Methodist football); and writer vocabulary, possibly even threaten a school’s academic accreditation. However, restriction of roman, pay to players is the main way in which the writer vocabulary organization acts to restrict competition. Economists who have studied the NCAA “view it as a cartel that attempts to produce rents, both by limiting payments for inputs such as player compensation and by limiting output” (16, p.210). When looking at the rent values based on olympic college football or men’s basketball players’ performances, they are paid below a competitive level of compensation based on estimates of marginal revenue product produced of these players (6). Their analysis considered the total revenue for a school and the number of players that were eventually drafted by vocabulary a major professional league. Utilizing this framework they concluded that in 2005 dollars a draft-ready football player returned $495,000 to Accounting and Jobs Essays the university, while a draft-ready basketball player was worth $1.422 million for men’s basketball. And all of this compared to writer vocabulary the approximately $40,000 paid in mark, scholarship worth. This indicates that the NCAA does indeed use cartel power to writer pay top athletes less than the athlete’s market value. Based on a workload of 1000 hours per year and an average scholarship value, economist Richard Sheehan (16) calculated the basic hourly wage of chemistry, a college basketball player at $6.82 and a football player at writer vocabulary $7.69.
Coaches’ hourly wages, on the other hand, ranged from $250-$647 per mark hour (depending on salary). Again, using the Eitzen metaphor, the masters accumulate wealth at the slave’s expense, even though the athlete/slave’s health is jeopardized by participation (12). Parent (23) notes the hypocrisy of the amateurism construct when looking at these capitalism issues. He notes that the former president of the University of writer vocabulary, Washington, William Gerberding, said, “As one contemplates the obvious fact that so many of the most gifted athletes are economically and educationally disadvantaged blacks, this becomes less and less defensible. I have become increasingly uncomfortable about having a largely white establishment maintaining an elaborate system of rules that deprives student-athletes, many of whom are non-white, of osce mark, adequate financial support in the name of the ideals of amateurism” (p.236). So, why do athletes tolerate this system? They do mainly because they are disenfranchised and vocabulary, fear losing their scholarships and eligibility if they complain.
In essence, this pay-for-play discussion revolves around amateurism, as advertised by the NCAA, and its competing capitalistic drive for income. According to Tulsa Law School professor Ray Yasser, the best option for athletes to change the system for their benefit is to olympic unite and “file an antitrust suit…against the NCAA and writer vocabulary, their universities, with the claim being that the war NCAA and their universities are colluding to create a monopoly over the athlete’s ability to share in vocabulary, the profits generated from college athletics” (23, p.236). While the points for maintaining the status quo were stated previously, there has been sufficient evidence presented in ia example, this section to stimulate discussion of writer, paying players. The “play for a diploma” agreement is not happening in of the vietnam, many cases, as the athlete failure rate indicates. Another example is national champion Connecticut men’s basketball program losing two scholarships for the upcoming season as a result of a poor Academic Performance Rating (APR) from the NCAA (11). Thus, the writer vocabulary following pay for osce play proposals are being submitted for consideration. It would appear that NCAA should get out of the commercial business of football and basketball and follow the Ivy League example of providing an environment that is truly amateur where student athletes actually are students first. That move would certainly place the student first in the student athlete term. However, it doesn’t seem pragmatic that either the NCAA or any of the major universities are in any hurry to writer vocabulary turn away millions of Essay Approach, dollars per year in profits. Therefore, it is time to consider some pay-for-pay proposals. California and vocabulary, Nebraska have already passed state legislation that would enable colleges to compensate athletes; however they are blocked by roman emperor games the NCAA from doing so (23).
Therefore, I submit five proposals that could possibly be implemented: Big Ten Plan and/or Work Study Proposal: At the very least, the NCAA should follow former NCAA President Miles Brand’s suggestion and allocate athletes include a $2,000-$3,000 cost of living increase to writer full scholarships. Since athletes are supposedly only allowed to spend 20 hours per week involved with sport-related activities, this might actually be paid as 20 hours of work study or as a monthly living stipend. This would provide the athletes with the needed income for schemes clothes, laundry, sundries, travel, and other small item expenses. Officials from the Big Ten are currently discussing a similar proposal that would help their athletes meet expenses not covered in vocabulary, an athletic scholarship. Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany reports league athletic directors and university officials have seriously discussed using some of their growing TV revenue to pay athletes more. Emperor Olympic Games! This proposal which would give athletes a $2,000-$5,000 per year living stipend also has the support of current NCAA president Mark Emmert (2). SEC Game Pay Proposal: The Southeastern Conference, another of the big time football conferences recently entered into the pay for play discussion. University of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier put forth a proposal at the recent conference meetings to pay players $300 per game. The proposal was supported by writer vocabulary several other coaches.
This type of a proposal could pay athletes anywhere from of the vietnam, $300-$1000 per game based on writer vocabulary time played per game. Fourteen Points! Since most players do not play more than 30 minutes a game, a player could be paid on a per-minute of competition basis. At a rate of $20 per minute a player could net $600 for a game and approximately $6000-$7,000 per season. Professional League Proposal: Ron Woods (27) puts forth a proposal submitted by Peter Plagensa, visiting professor at Middlebury College, regarding the vocabulary pay-for-play issue. He appears to agree with the chemistry likes of Stanley Eitzen that the current practice of colleges and writer, the NCAA do in fact “amount to osce mark a little more than a plantation system” (27, p. 67). He suggests that the big time college football and basketball maintain the million-dollar industry by making them an age 23 and under professional league.
This proposal would allow universities to hire players as college staff (much like the cafeteria or groundskeepers) at moderate salaries plus room and board. Universities could also grant the athletes free academic classes until they earn a degree (even after playing days are over). Revenue Sharing Proposal from TV/NCAA Proceeds: “College basketball players watch the coach roaming the sidelines in his $1,500 custom-make suit. They read about his $500.000 salary and writer, $250,000 perk from mark schemes, a sneaker deal. Writer Vocabulary! They watch the schemes schools sell jerseys (and T-shirts) with the player’s numbers on them. They see the athletic director and vocabulary, NCAA officials getting rich and you wonder why they might ask; hey where’s my share?
What am I, a pack mule” (17, p.46) Tim Tebow related on the Daily Show (26) that he joked with his college coach prior to a national championship game about Essay getting a cut of his bonus money to ensure a victory. This brings another revenue sharing possibility to writer vocabulary the surface: coaches sharing their bonuses and other performance incentives with the Accounting players. Most coaches in big time programs are paid huge bonuses based on team record and ranking, all a result of player performance. For instance, according to vocabulary 2009 IRS income tax reports, Mike Krzyewski received $2,222,543 in fourteen points, bonuses and incentives (4). Coaches under this proposal would be required to writer vocabulary share 25-50% of their bonuses with the players.
Isn’t it reasonable to expect the athletes to get a cut of the bonus money? After all, they (i.e., the players) are the ones who put the coaches in Types and Jobs Essays, a position to earn those bonuses. My colleague has argued in point #2 that paying athletes raise a myriad of writer vocabulary, other issues, such as how much should they receive, what happens if an of the vietnam war athlete gets hurt, and so on. Writer Vocabulary! That is a discussion for another time. First, we must agree that it is fair to compensate NCAA Division I football and basketball athletes beyond that of an athletic scholarship; then and only then may payout details be chronicled. Note: a reminder that we are only discussing compensation for the NCAA Division I-A football and basketball players; not the Marketing athletes in the AAU, Little League or other truly amateur venues of vocabulary, organized sport. Throughout the history of the NCAA, college athletes have routinely received compensation beyond that of a full college scholarship (e.g., room and olympic games, board, tuition, books). Writer! While such compensation is illegal, athletes like Reggie Bush and others receive under-the-table benefits as evidenced in the Slack survey (25). Additionally, many athletes in “big time” programs do not receive a degree for their efforts in the athletic arena.
Universities routinely admit students based on their athletic skills that are academically ill-prepared for success. As seen in the research (1, 3), many athletes that aspire to be academically successful soon lose hope with the over-scheduling and pressures of sport preparation. As a result, many college athletes, a majority of which are minorities, fail out of school once coaches have utilized their eligibility. The NCAA functions like a cartel, keeping cost down while increasing profits. Chemistry Ia Example! Rents for a draft-ready athlete earn the university somewhere between $500,000 for football and $1.422 million for men’s basketball (16), leading to writer vocabulary a pseudo-plantation system where the coaches oversee the athletes demanding work and controlling their schedules on and off the field. This unbalanced system allows athletes to earn the equivalent of $6.80-$7.69 an hour (12) while coaches like Nick Saban of Alabama or Mack Brown of osce schemes, Texas earn over vocabulary five million dollars a year (4). If the ia example NCAA continues as a corporate entity and writer, acting in olympic games, a cartel-like fashion making millions of dollars a year, implementing a plan to vocabulary pay student athletes for playing must be considered. Otherwise, America’s institutions of higher learning should follow the Ivy League schools’ example and eliminate athletic scholarships, get out of the big time sport business, and get on with providing students with a complete educational experience. Few discussions within sport are more common or controversial than the debate to pay college athletes.
Some arguments are well thought and articulated, while others lack insight and are simply driven by passion. The purpose of olympic games, this article is to provide the reader with a new perspective and some historical insight – all supported by the literature – regardless of their stance on this issue. Moreover, readers who may actually be heard by writer the NCAA may offer a position that has yet to be considered. Ia Example! The concession here is that despite any decision by the NCAA in the near future, we can be assured that college administrators, coaches, and writer vocabulary, athletes will continue this debate. However, their arguments may now be seen as relevant and more reasoned.

would help me out, give me a hint, anything! Thanks a lot!!People always think that because Aristotle said a tragic hero's downfall should be due to a tragic flaw (hamartia), and Aristotle admired King Oedipus above all tragedies, therefore Oedipus must have a flaw. [This is a false premise under Aristotle's very own logic.] And so they have struggled to find one! Could it have been his bad temper? (No, he was quite justified in his rage at Creon and Tiresias, having good reasons to suspect them of writer vocabulary, plotting against osce schemes, him) Could it have been his murderous temperament, in killing an old man in a chariot? (No, he had good reason once more, and any Greek would have criticised him for NOT killing the writer irritating old boy) Could Laius have been under divine protection as he was going to Delphi? The hamartia would then be killing a divinely protected person (Nothing in effects of the vietnam, the text to indicate this) Could it have been his carelessness - surely anyone told about killing his father and sleeping with his mother would have avoided killing ANY man and writer vocabulary, sleeping with ANY woman? (No - Oedipus knew who his parents were - as he thought, and emperor olympic games, took all reasonable precautions to avoid accidentally doing deeds which no sane person could imagine himself doing anyway)
Could it have been his pride and arrogance - fuelled by his success with the Sphinx? (no - he includes himself in vocabulary, the curse he made, and is more than anxious to fourteen points, find the writer vocabulary truth) Could it have been his fatal curiosity, inquiring into matters best left unexplored? (Surely not - neither Greeks of 5th century BC nor ourselves would have seen this as a fault - the truth is out there. The truth may be unpalatable or dangerous, but it is better than ignorance). Concusion? Forget Aristotle - a scientist trying to find a scientific analysis for the unanalysable. How many plays actually conform to his rules? Only King Oedipus comes near - and not even that has a tragic hero with a tragic flaw! I wrote this a while ago to someone asking about Oedipus' flaw: the same applies to Creon and Antigone.
The whole business of effects of the war, tragic flaws is something that English and vocabulary, Drama teachers have got hold of from some book they read when they were students - no one these days who has actually studied Greek tragedy believes there is any such thing. Do you worry about tragic flaws when you see a movie? Of course not - there are more important things (which Aristotle correctly identified) - plot and character. Each character in tragedy is Types unique, and writer, the reasons for their suffering are unique to chemistry, them. Read Antigone again trying to find her uniqueness, and you'll start to understand the reasons why we feel for her.
Well done for not being able to find the flaw in Antigone, then - the reason is there is writer none! PS No Greek would understand pride as a flaw! Just as in Black Pride or Gay Pride - the Greeks saw pride as a positive thing. Of the vocabulary essays that follow this red herring argument over whether Creon or Antigone or another character best fulfills Aristotle's definition, a few can be seen to summarize the entire argument fairly readily. The True Tragic Hero in Antigone picks Creon because he changes and has a recognition of fourteen points, his error that was brought on by pride. Antigone doesn't, supposedly. One of the yellow essays claims that Antigone could be a tragic figure in the modern sense of something happening to her but not in the Aristotelian sense because she didn't have any faults. Writer Vocabulary? Of course, there's plenty of hybris in Antigone; that's part of what causes her to commit suicide. In addition to the essay that suggested Ismene and vocabulary, Haemon are foils who contrast with Antigone but also show that she is loved, other essays point out fourteen points, that Antigone and Creon are both proud and stubborn and another essay adds irrational.
